Techniques Your Plastic Surgeon May Use For Your Breast Lift

A breast lift, also known as breast mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reposition your breasts and restore a fuller, more uplifted, youthful appearance. This surgery is not a one-size-fits-all solution to sagging breasts. Instead, based on your body’s proportions, your health, and your goals for surgery, your plastic surgeon will select the surgical technique most suited for you.

You might consider a breast mastopexy if:

  • Your breasts sit lower than you would like due to pregnancy, weight loss, age, or genetics.
  • The tissue surrounding the nipple or areola has become stretched.
  • If breast implants alone cannot achieve the results you desire.

These are the techniques your surgeon may choose to achieve optimal results for your breast lift.

The Types Of Breast Lift Techniques

Based on your unique body and your goals for breast mastopexy, your surgeon will decide which of these techniques is ideal for you.

Crescent Breast Lift

If you have minimal sagging, your plastic surgeon may opt for a Crescent Breast Lift. This technique only requires one incision that will run along the outer edge of the top half of your areola. Because this incision is made within the darker pigmented area of your areola, resulting scarring is practically unnoticeable.

Peri-Areolar Breast Lift

This technique also results in minimal scarring and is ideal for women with very mild sagging. With one circular incision around the entire outside edge of your areola, your plastic surgeon can subtly lift your breasts and refine the size and shape of your areola. This technique is also called a “Donut Lift”.

Vertical Breast Lift

A Vertical Breast Lift requires two incisions. One incision is made around the outside edge of the areola and one is made vertically from the bottom of the areola to the inframammary fold (your natural breast crease). The technique is used for women who have moderate sagging and allows your plastic surgeon to complete more extensive reshaping of your breasts. This technique is also referred to as a “Lollipop Lift” due to the shape of the incision.

Anchor Breast Lift

The technique allows your surgeon to complete the most dramatic reshaping and repositioning of your breasts. It is reserved for women with more severe sagging who would benefit from tissue removal. Your surgeon will make three incisions: one around the outer edge of the areola, one made vertically from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease, and one along the inframammary fold. This technique results in more visible scarring, but still in locations that are easily hidden by a bra or bathing suit. This technique is also commonly used for breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) procedures.

FAQ

Q: How long does breast lift surgery take?
A: Breast mastopexy is performed as outpatient surgery and may take from 1-3 hours depending on the extent of refinement needed.

Q: Am I a good candidate for a breast lift?
A: If you are healthy overall and realistic with your goals for breast mastopexy, you are likely a good candidate. Book a complimentary consultation with Dr. Ladak to discuss your concerns and what outcomes you hope to achieve from surgery.

Q: What kind of scars will I have after breast surgery?
A: The type of scars you will have is dependent on the technique your plastic surgeon opts for in your breast lift surgery. Most scarring is undetectable within your areola or your breast fold, and other scars will be easily hidden under a bra or bathing suit. Follow your doctor's post-surgical care instructions to heal well and minimize scarring.
