How To Choose The Right Bras After Breast Augmentation

How To Choose The Right Bras After Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure intended to increase the size of your breasts with saline or silicone implants. It is most commonly considered by women who have lost breast volume due to aging, pregnancy, or weight loss, women who have one breast that is noticeably larger, and women whose natural breasts are smaller than they would like. One of the more exciting moments after choosing breast augmentation is shopping for your new bra wardrobe.

You have visions of silk and lace to showcase your new cleavage and fullness. But before you rush out and spend a small fortune, take a moment and consider these tips to ensure your bra budget is money well spent.

Choosing Bras After Breast Augmentation

The First Bra Post Surgery

Immediately after breast augmentation your plastic surgeon will recommend a surgical bra. This bra is specially constructed with high-quality materials, designed to support your breasts as your tissues recover, and provide light compression to promote optimal healing. It can also help reduce swelling and will accommodate drainage tubes more easily if you require them. Surgical bras often open and close in the front which makes them easier to put on and take off if you are experiencing soreness in your arms, shoulders, and chest after augmentation. These bras are intended to be worn 24/7 until you are cleared by your doctor.

Take It Slow

When you are mostly healed and your plastic surgeon gives the ok, you can begin searching for bras that reflect your style and highlight your newly enhanced bust. But a word to the wise… do not rush out and stock up on a ton of bras. It can take three to four months ( or even longer for some women) until swelling is completely gone and your breasts have settled into their new normal. Try one or two new bras to begin with and save the big splurge for a few months down the road.

Re-measure!

You may have placed an order with your plastic surgeon to up your breast volume two full cup sizes. But it is still important to re-measure before purchasing your new bra wardrobe. Your band size should remain the same as it was pre-surgery, but your cup size will definitely be different. To find your correct band size measure around your ribcage under your breasts. If it is an odd number add 5 inches, if it is even add 4 inches.  For your cup size measure across the fullest part of your breasts. Subtract the difference between your band measurement and your bust measurement. If the difference is 3 inches you are a C cup, 4 inches is a D cup and so on. As mentioned above, your bra size could change as your breasts heal and settle, so measure every time you buy a new bra.

And here are a few additional facts to know…

Bras Just For You

There are some bra brands that design bras specifically for women who have chosen augmentation. These bras offer flattering cuts, special fabrics, and shorter underwires ideal for women with implants.

To Underwire Or Not To Underwire

There is some debate as to whether women with implants should avoid bras with underwires. Underwire bras do provide great support for your new larger and heavier breasts, but standard bras with underwires are not always cut to fit enhanced breasts well. But all surgeons do agree that underwire bras should be completely avoided until your breasts have completely healed to avoid irritating your incisions, and rubbing and pressure on sensitive tissues.

Nipple Alert

Many women report increased nipple sensitivity and nipples that are permanently erect after implants. If these issues concern you, choose bras that have padding or consider nipple covers.

Support Yourself

Your new breasts weigh more. Ensure that you are choosing supportive bras that distribute this new weight evenly across your chest, back, and shoulders. And always wear a supportive sports bra when participating in athletic activities.

BONUS FACT: Most of these tips apply to women who have chosen breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, as well.
