Botox Aftercare: What to Avoid After Your Treatment

Are you considering a Botox treatment? For the most natural and safest results, here are some important aftercare dos and don’ts of this popular cosmetic procedure.

With the incredible advancements in cosmetic treatments, patients no longer have to opt for surgery to achieve all their aesthetic goals. Today, non-surgical cosmetic treatments such as Juvederm and Botox are becoming more popular at our Edmonton skin clinic, as they offer a more affordable and convenient alternative to traditional plastic surgeries.

These treatments have many benefits, including:

  • More cost-effective than surgery
  • Quicker treatment times (approximately 15-30 minutes for one treatment)
  • Little to no recovery time
  • Fewer side effects
  • Long lasting and visible results

Botox Aftercare: What You Should Do & What You Should Avoid

When it comes to skin treatments such as Botox, aftercare is extremely important, but it’s also something patients tend to overlook.

However, you should remember that if you don’t take care of yourself properly, there are a number of things that may happen, including:

  • You’ll heal slower
  • You could undo the work that has been done, meaning you’ll need another treatment
  • You could damage your skin and health

That’s why is crucial that you follow your plastic surgeon’s post-treatment care instructions carefully.

To help you achieve safe and beautiful results, here are some tips you may want to consider:

What You Should NOT Do

After your Botox treatment, one of the most important things to remember is this: Never rub your face or have any kind of facial massage for at least 24 hours after your procedure, as this could move the Botox around into unwanted areas.

Note: In some cases, if the Botox moves downwards, it could cause serious breathing problems.

4 Botox Recovery Tips

In addition to the important tip above, there are certain things you can do after your skin treatment to help speed up the healing process.

These include:

  1. Choosing the right sleeping position. Do not sleep on your stomach after your Botox treatment. Lying down on your back will reduce the risk of your moving the Botox around during the night.

  2. Avoiding strenuous exercise. Some doctors also recommend that you don’t bend down, lie down, or do any strenuous exercise immediately after your treatment. Because such activity could cause the Botox to move, it’s best to avoid it for a few hours after the procedure.

  3. Keep away from certain drugs, medication and treatments: Avoiding certain painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen will reduce your risk of bruising. You should also keep away from treatments such as a sauna that will subject your body to high heat levels.

  4. Avoid certain cosmetic treatments for at least one week. To further reduce any treatment risks, you should avoid aggressive skin manipulation for up to one week after the treatment. This means staying away from procedures such as microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, and electrolysis.

What You Can Do

There is not much you can do to help Botox do its job. You should simply rest and wait for your incredible results (which should take between 3-5 days to show fully).

However, you may also want to:

  • Gently exercise the muscles in the treated area by pulling your natural facial expressions. This will help the Botox work its way into the muscle.
  • Apply an ice pack to the treated area to help reduce swelling and bruising.
  • Stay away from the sun for at least 3 days after your treatment.
  • Use Tylenol to relieve any discomfort or pain you may be having.
