A rhinoplasty, more commonly called a nose job, is one of the most common cosmetic procedures administered today. It can be an excellent method of restoring your youth, boosting your confidence, and helping you feel more comfortable in your own skin.

If one or more of the following applies to you, you may be an excellent candidate for a rhinoplasty:

  • You have a broken nose that hasn’t healed right
  • You're unhappy with the appearance of your nose
  • You have trouble breathing through your nose
  • Your nose has an unpleasant deformity

Once you have decided that this procedure is right for you, you should start looking at the ins and outs of this cosmetic surgery.

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Although you may have never heard the term “Rhinoplasty” before, it's most likely that you know it by its more common name, the “Nose Job”. Patients tend to choose to undergo the procedure for mostly cosmetic reasons, but also to repair a damaged or malfunctioning nasal cavity to help improve their breathing. Regardless of your reasons for getting the procedure, here is what you can expect during the recovery process.

What Happens Once My Rhinoplasty is Completed?

When patients research and prepare themselves for a cosmetic procedure, the primary focus is mostly on how they will feel once they are fully healed. Oftentimes, not enough thought is given to the recovery period.

Immediately following your surgery, your plastic surgeon will bandage your wounds, apply stitches, splints, and other physical aids to help in the recovery. Once you have been cleared by your surgeon to leave, your designated driver will take you home so you can rest.

What Do I Do At Home?

The probability of a successful surgery can be significantly increased if you take the time and effort to rest, relax, and allow your body to heal. If you are looking for how to prepare yourself and your home following a rhinoplasty, here are some tips.

Get Plenty of Rest:
Resting your body immediately after the surgery is the best way to help your body heal. You should rest as much as you can for the first couple of weeks, and only gradually increase the amount of exercise and activity you do. Also, be sure to avoid swimming until you are cleared to do so.

Watch Your Diet:
After any surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to feel nauseous and have abnormal bowel movements. That's why you should make sure you drink lots of water, avoid foods that upset your stomach, and take a fibre supplement if you need one.

Follow Your Surgeon's Advice on Medication:
Before and after your surgery, your plastic surgeon will provide you with instructions and advice on any medication you will need to take for your procedure. Be sure to follow this as accurately as possible, and don’t be afraid to ask for any clarification, if you need it.

Care For Your Nose:
Be sure that, no matter what you are doing, you are taking care of your nose. You should avoid blowing or wiping your nose and putting it under any unnecessary pressure. You can clean your nose with warm water and mild soap, as well as using an ice pack every couple of hours for fifteen minutes in the first few days post-surgery.

Be Mindful of Your Glasses:
If you wear glasses, try not to use them as often, as this will allow your nose to rest. If you do need to put them on, we recommend affixing some tape between your glasses and space between your eyes so that you are able to wear your glasses without putting any undue pressure on your nose.

FAQ’s

Q: How long does it take to fully recover from a rhinoplasty?

Although it will ultimately depend on you and how you treat your recovery period, most patients can completely return to their normal life six weeks post-operation. After around six months, you should feel no further effects from the operation, and your nose should have full function and sensation.

Q: How long does the surgery take?

A Rhinoplasty tends to take between 1-3 hours. Your time period will depend on many circumstances surrounding the specifics of your operation.

Q: Will a nose job hurt?

As with any surgical procedure, you will likely experience some minor pain. However, most of the discomfort you may feel can be very easily treated with both prescribed and over the counter painkillers.
