Top Plastic Surgery Trends

The American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) recently released their annual statistical data, and there were no major surprises when it came to the top 5 plastic surgery procedures performed in 2014. However, there was an interesting trend when it came to the increase in men having cosmetic surgery. With the popularity and success of cosmetic surgeries like the abdominoplasty and blepharoplasty, men are all in when it comes to wanting to look and feel younger.

According to ASAPS annual data, for men and women combined, the following were the top 5 plastic surgery procedures performed in 2014:

  • Liposuction
  • Breast Augmentation
  • Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
  • Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
  • Rhinoplasty (nose job)

Some interesting points that the data shows are that, while it's still in the top five, breast augmentation surgeries saw a decrease of 8.5% and men having cosmetic surgery saw a major increase in 2014. The data found that there was an increase of 43% of all surgical and nonsurgical procedures among men. Specifically, procedures like the blepharoplasty and facelift have seen an increase of 34% and 44% respectively among men in the past 5 years. To further solidify that this is not a passing trend for men, the ASAPS has seen a total increase of 273% in the number of plastic procedures performed on men since 1997.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery believes that the increase in men having plastic surgery procedures is not a flash in the pan. While seeking employment is not necessarily the primary reason for plastic surgery, both male and female patients enjoy major professional success after having cosmetic surgery. Another reason why men are having more cosmetic surgery is because society’s view on the subject has drastically changed in the past decade. Essentially, it’s more accepting for males to have cosmetic procedures done, be it surgical or non-surgical. With an increased number of men converting to healthier active lifestyles, excess skin left behind from weight loss is also a big reason more and more men are undegoing plastic surgery procedures. Methods like the abdominoplasty, commonly known as the tummy tuck, eliminate the excess skin and result in a smoother and flatter stomach. The desire to look and feel young is not exclusive to women and with the great track record that plastic surgery has, more and more men are going to continue to have plastic surgery completed.
