  • The Difference Between Botox Lip Flip and Lip Fillers As Explained By Our Edmonton Botox and Filler Specialists

You’re so close to the perfect pout. A little bit of help in the right places will give you the appearance of fuller lips, but which option is the right one? Should you use Botox on your lips or stick with fillers?

Botox and “fillers” are words that are sometimes used interchangeably, but they’re not the same product. Botox refers to a medical injectable used to relax muscles, where fillers are injectables used to plump or fill in volume. Why would you want to relax your lips, you may wonder.

The Botox Lip Flip

It may seem odd to inject a muscle relaxer into your lips, but hear us out. Botox works by restricting the nerve signals in muscles, preventing them from contracting. When injected in small doses into the top layer of the muscle around the sides of your lips, it can give your mouth the appearance of fullness by “flipping” the lip outward. The relaxed muscles allow the lips to roll gently out. Results typically last from two to four months. The lips do not actually become fuller, only appear so.

This is a good option for someone who wants a subtle effect, or to see how they might look with fuller lips before considering more permanent or longer-lasting options. The downside, of course, is that if your surgeon injects too much it could relax your mouth to the point of difficulty moving it, giving you trouble eating or drinking. However, this procedure should only be undertaken by certified cosmetic professionals.

Lip Fillers

Lip fillers are the tried-and-true standby for fuller lips. They work by injecting a smooth gel similar to compounds found naturally in the body into your lips, literally making them fuller. They are generally longer lasting. Results can remain for around six months with a product like Restylane or Juvederm. As with the Botox Lip Flip, there is little to no downtime and the procedure doesn’t take very long.

Lip fillers make your lips larger, so there is no illusion to the enhancement. The results are longer lasting without any potential medical side effects to the mouth. Expected swelling and bruising can occur, as well as bleeding, uneven lips, or the movement of the filler within the lips.
