Is Breast Reduction Right For You?

Breast size is often considered an object of beauty, but we don’t always consider them a cause of chronic pain.  With about 1 million women affected by extremely large breasts, breast reductions are becoming much more common.  Edmonton plastic surgeon Dr. Adil Ladak performs breast reductions, or a mammyoplasties, regularly in his practice for a variety of reasons, but mostly to improve women’s health and comfort.

Many women with larger breasts often suffer from back pain, neck discomfort, migraines, shortness of breath and limited mobility.   Many times these symptoms are overlooked and women deal with years of discomfort, especially women who have never been properly measured and professionally fitted for a bra.  A large percent of our population is wearing the incorrect bra size.  They’re wearing a bra that is too small and therefore they’re unaware of their real size and the potential harm associated.  Other women carrying excess weight on their chests can experience tingling and numbness in their arms and shoulder pain from bra straps.

Women with larger breast have a few options to deal with the chronic pain including physical therapy and pain medication to alleviate discomfort. Dr. Adil Ladak of Edmonton plastic surgery advises breast augmentation as the best solution.

There are several ways a breast reduction can be performed in Edmonton, but the objective is always the same: to remove approximately 1 lb or more of fatty tissue and skin from the chest area.  The entire operation lasts only 3 hours and since there is no muscle or organ removal, recovery time is rather quick and painless.  There is a potential for some scarring but it is usually minimal and depends on how much you typically scar.  Breast reductions have the additional benefit of reducing your chances of breast cancer.  While not recommended as a way to reduce the risk of breast cancer, it is a nice plus.  He found that women whom had opted for breast reduction saw marked reductions and in some cases elimination of chronic pain as a result of the operation. His results are echoed in a Swedish study which also found that women who opted for the breast reduction surgery were extremely happy with their results and their pain was reduced significantly.
