How to Take Care of Your Skin Before and After Botox

Are you considering a Botox treatment to rejuvenate your skin and achieve a more youthful glow? Here’s how to take care of your skin before and after this cosmetic procedure to ensure you get the safest and most satisfactory results.

While it’s true that you cannot prevent the aging process, minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as Botox can help you naturally slow its progress and eliminate any signs of unwanted facial lines and wrinkles, helping you keep that youthful and healthy glow.

Today, non-surgical anti-aging procedures such as Juvederm and Botox are gaining popularity over more extensive cosmetic surgeries, such as facelifts, because they offer benefits such as:

  • Quicker treatment times
  • More affordable costs
  • Fewer side effects
  • No downtime
  • No surgical risks

Before Botox: How to Prepare For Your Treatment

When administered by a board-certified plastic surgeon, Botox is an extremely safe and effective way to meet all your anti-aging goals. However, to ensure the safest results, there are certain things you must do before your treatment.

This includes:

  • Stop taking certain medications. One week before your procedure, you must stop taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, Vitamin E or fish oil supplements. These products may increase bruising and bleeding at the treatment site. If you do require a pain remedy, you can take Tylenol.

  • Eat a healthy diet. Adding leafy greens to your diet will help boost your Vitamin K and this will, in turn, reduce your risk of bruising and swelling.

  • Talk to your doctor about Arnica supplements. These supplements have been shown to reduce discomfort, swelling, and bruising from Botox procedures. They can be started the day before your treatment and should be continued until your bruising has resolved.

  • Postpone all your social plans. Because bruising and swelling are possible from your Botox treatment, you should schedule all your social plans for at least 7-10 days after your procedure.

  • Be realistic. While the initial effects of the Botox treatment will be visible within 3 days, you should expect that your final results will be achieved at least 2-3 weeks after the injection.

The Truth About Botox

Post Botox: Looking After Your Skin Following the Treatment

Many people underestimate the importance of Botox after-care. However, to make sure you minimize your risk of any side effects, and to encourage the best results possible, it’s crucial that you follow these post-Botox tips:

  • Do not massage the treatment area, or have any type of facial massage for at least 24 hours after your injection. Doing so could cause the Botox to spread into unwanted areas.

  • Don’t schedule any facial laser or electrical treatments for at least two weeks following your Botox injection.

  • You can resume your skin care program on the same day of your treatment. Talk to your doctor about whether or not it’s okay to wear makeup after your procedure.

  • Don’t do any strenuous exercise. Try to limit any activities that involve heavy lifting or straining for at least the day of your treatment.

  • Avoid the sun for at least 72 hours following your procedure. When you do go outside, remember to apply sunblock (SPF 30 or higher).
