Brachioplasty procedures (arm lifts) are becoming more and more popular amongst patients who have experienced significant weight loss. This surgical body contouring procedure is designed to reduce any excess fat of the upper underarm and tighten the skin, dramatically improving your appearance.
Many plastic surgeons recommend a brachioplasty to:
- Get rid of excess skin from the area between the elbow and underarm
- Create a better proportioned and firmer arm appearance
- Reshape your arm for smoother skin and improved contours
- Reduce localized pockets of fat in the upper arm area

Your Brachioplasty Recovery Guide: What to Expect
When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, a brachioplasty is a safe way to achieve the toned and firm upper arm appearance you want. It’s associated with relatively easy recovery, but as with all cosmetic surgery, you must follow your surgeon’s post-procedure care instructions to ensure you lower your risk of complications and receive the best outcome.
How long will recovery take? Typically, the recovery period for a brachioplasty can range from 7 days (mini-brachioplasty) to 21 days (full-brachioplasty).
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT A BRACHIOPLASTY
Brachioplasty Recovery Tips For the Best Arm Lift Outcome
- Enlist the help of a reliable family member or friend. Before your surgery, arrange for a trusted family member or friend to drive you to your surgery and take you home after the procedure.
- Make sure to get enough rest. Your plastic surgeon will instruct you to rest for the first couple of days following your brachioplasty. While you should avoid any lifting or heavy exercise, some light walking around the house is encouraged to promote blood flow.
- Drink lots of fluids. Drink lots of fluids, especially water, as this will prevent you from becoming dehydrated and it will promote the healing process.
- You’ll be wearing compression garments. You shouldn’t remove these garments until the first post-operative visit.
- Some bleeding in the first 24 hours is normal. However, if you’re having excessive bleeding, or have any other concerns, you should contact your surgeon immediately.
- Don’t exercise for the 1st month. Remember, it’s important to give your body time to rest. Avoid strenuous activity and talk to your surgeon about when you can return to your normal exercise routine.
- Take care of your incisions. Look after the treatment site and make sure that your incisions aren’t subjected to excessive force, swelling, or motion during the healing period.
Talk to Your Doctor About Any Medications You Are Taking
Patients are instructed to avoid aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications for the first few days following a brachioplasty. This is to ensure that no complications arise during or after your procedure.
In addition to this, you should also stop the following for at least 2 weeks before your surgery:
- Smoking and other tobacco products
- Alcohol
- Vitamin E
- Herbal supplements
Remember: If you have any questions or doubts regarding your medications or other supplements, you MUST talk to your plastic surgeon. He/she can advise on the best course of action.
