How to Buy Clothes After Your Breast Augmentation

Have you just undergone a breast implant surgery? Here are some clothing tips on how to dress after your customized augmentation.

One of the most crucial factors in the success of cosmetic surgery, such as a breast implant procedure, is a patient’s ability to fully heal afterwards.

After your treatment, it’s very important to follow your plastic surgeon’s post-care advice as this will:

  • Ensure a quicker and smoother recovery period
  • Lower your risk of developing complications
  • Keep you comfortable during healing
  • Ensure more satisfactory results

How to Shop For New Clothes Following Your Breast Implant Surgery

For many women, breast implants are the realization of a long-time dream, but having a curvier body also means that the patient has to adapt to their new body image and shop accordingly.

When to shop

Patients typically experience post-operative swelling for 4-6 weeks after surgery and the breasts must drop into their final position during the first few months after augmentation. During this time, patients should not purchase new clothes but have a few transitional bras and garments on hand.

Once the swelling is gone

Once the swelling from the procedure has gone down, patients can begin the process of updating the wardrobe to match their new figure.

Here are some tips to help with the process:

  1. Bras

Shopping for a new supportive bra should only begin after you receive approval from your plastic surgeon. Even then, it is best to have a professional fitting to determine the proper size.

Some of the things to keep in mind include:

  • If an over supportive bra is worn too soon after surgery, it can interfere with the proper settling of your implants.
  • Some doctors recommend only buying a few bras at first as during the first months, swelling might still be present and the final size not yet realized
  • A supportive sports bra may help your breasts settle properly and can aid in the healing process.

Remember: Most plastic surgeons recommend a healing period of between 3-6 weeks, which includes wearing support bandages and surgical bras. During this period, you can expect some swelling and determining your new size will be difficult until the swelling has diminished.

  1. Bathing Suits

While shopping for a new bathing suit can be exciting following breast implant surgery, it can be more challenging than expected because women with larger breasts have to consider both coverage and support.

In general, a halter-top style can be very flattering as it provides both the support and coverage you need while flattering your new shape.

Tip: Manufacturers that provide separate sizes for tops and bottoms are a good source of bathing suits for women with augmented breasts.

  1. Tops and Dresses

When you’re buying new tops and dresses, the neckline will be a major consideration. While V-necks are slimming and can highlight your new figure, it can also be too revealing. As an alternative, you may want to consider a cowl neck.

  • Waistline: Styles without a defined waist can make your figure look larger as they hang straight from the bust, so tops and dresses that are more fitted are often a more flattering choice.
  • Tops: If you see a top that you like, make sure that it has thicker and stronger straps that will support your augmented and heavier breasts.
  • Business jackets: When shopping, look for jackets with a single button placed strategically below the chest. This will flatter your shape and still look professional.
