How To Maintain The Results After Eyelid Surgery

How To Maintain The Results After Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures requested. Hooded eyelids, sagging skin, under-eye bags, and lines and wrinkles can be hereditary or the result of the natural process of aging. Eyelid surgery is one of the most requested plastic surgery procedures and can dramatically enhance the appearance of the eyes by removing excess skin, fat, or muscle from the eyelids. Blepharoplasty can also improve vision by removing draping skin that can obscure sight. This procedure can provide long-lasting results, but like any surgical procedure, the results require maintenance and care.

What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty pinpoints areas of concern on the upper or lower eyelids. Using a small incision carefully concealed in the natural fold of your eye or inside your lid, your plastic surgeon will remove excess skin and tissue and close the incision with stitches. If you wish to address a heavy-lidded look, loose skin, excess fatty tissue, puffiness, wrinkles, and sagging in the upper or lower eyelids, blepharoplasty can provide a more rejuvenated, youthful, and open appearance to your eyes. Recovery after eyelid surgery is reasonably short and typically not complicated. To keep your eyes looking great for a long time, take steps to protect and prolong the results of your eyelid surgery.

Tips To Maintain Your Eyelid Surgery Results

Follow a Healthy Lifestyle
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial to maintaining your results after eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty. Eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough rest can help keep your body and skin healthy and help slow the aging process.

Protect Your Skin from the Sun
Protecting your skin from the sun is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your results after eyelid surgery. Sun exposure can cause hyperpigmentation, scarring, and sun damage to the delicate skin of your eyes, which can compromise the results of your surgery. To protect your skin from the sun, wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, wear a hat and sunglasses, and avoid prolonged sun exposure.

Avoid Smoking and Drinking Alcohol
Smoking and drinking alcohol can negatively impact your overall health and the results of your eyelid surgery. Smoking damages your skin, causing it to age prematurely and slowing down the healing process. Drinking alcohol can dehydrate your body and cause inflammation, which can affect the results of your surgery. It is recommended to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for at least two weeks before and after surgery to ensure a successful recovery.

Moisturize Your Skin
Moisturizing your skin is essential to maintain the results of your eyelid surgery. After the surgery, your skin may become dry and itchy due to the healing process. To prevent this, use a gentle moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and nourished. Avoid using harsh products that can irritate your skin and delay the healing process.

Follow Your Surgeon's Post-Operative Instructions
Following your surgeon's post-operative instructions is crucial to maintaining the results of your eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty. Your surgeon will provide you with specific guidelines on how to care for your eyelids after surgery, including how to clean the area, when to use ice packs, and how to apply any prescribed medication. It is essential to follow these instructions carefully to ensure a successful recovery and maintain the results of your surgery.

Visit Your Plastic Surgeon
Follow-up visits with your surgeon are important to monitor your recovery and ensure that you are healing properly. Your plastic surgeon may also be able to recommend additional treatments or procedures to enhance your results and ensure your eyes remain looking bright for years to come.

FAQ

Q: How long does it take to see results after blepharoplasty?
You will likely notice immediate results due to the extra skin and tissue that has been removed during your surgery. But you will experience some swelling and bruising that could last 2-4 weeks or even longer. You can expect to see the final results from your plastic surgery 2-3 months post-op.

Q: Is blepharoplasty an outpatient procedure?
A:  Yes. Blepharoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure and you will go home within an hour or two after your surgery to heal. It is recommended that you have a friend or family member take you home and assist you for the first day or two after surgery.

Q: Is blepharoplasty covered by my insurance?
A: Alberta Health may cover blepharoplasty if the excess skin of your eyelids impairs your vision and if you are over the age of 65. It does not cover blepharoplasty for cosmetic reasons. Book a complimentary consultation with Dr. Ladak to determine if you qualify for AHS subsidy.
