Breast Lift vs Breast Augmentation

Many women today decide to have some form of breast surgery. Some want to balance out their figure by way of a breast augmentation or reduction. Others want to restore the look they had before pregnancy, which may involve a breast lift.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery is performed to enhance the size and shape of your breasts using artificial (saline or silicone) implants.  It is often recommended if your breasts:

  • Are too small for your body.
  • Have become smaller due to weight loss.
  • Have become less firm due to age and pregnancy.
  • Are asymmetrical (one is smaller than the other)
Saline or Silicone Implants?

The type of implants that are chosen depends on the individual patient. They are typically either saline or silicone and can be shaped to be either anatomical or round. The size will be determined by your preference and body type.

What happens during a breast augmentation?

When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, a breast augmentation is a safe and effective cosmetic procedure.

Step 1: The sedative or general anaesthetic is administered.

Step 2: Incisions are made either in the armpit, the crease of the breast, or the perimeter of the areola.

Step 3: Entering through the incision, your plastic surgeon will create a pocket in the breast tissue or chest wall tissue, and the implant will be centred directly behind the nipple.

Step 4: The layers of tissue will be carefully stitched back together with sutures. Drains may also be used to help reduce swelling and discomfort during recovery.

What Can a Breast Augmentation Not Do?

While a breast augmentation can enlarge the size and projection of the breasts, it CANNOT lift them. If this is your desired goal, then you may want to consider a breast lift.

Breast Lift

Sagging or deflated breasts are a common problem in women who are aging, have experienced pregnancy and breastfeeding, or have lost/gained a lot of weight.

A breast lift can recreate the natural lift of your breasts for a more youthful and pleasing appearance. You may want to consider one if:

  • You feel as if your breasts sag or have lost shape/volume
  • Your nipples and areolas point downward
  • You have stretched skin and enlarged areolas
  • One breast is lower than the other
  • Your breasts have a flatter, elongated shape
What happens during a breast lift?

Your breast lift surgery can be achieved through a number of different techniques, but in general, here is what you can expect:

Step 1: Your plastic surgeon will recommend whether intravenous sedation or general  anesthesia  is the best choice for you.

Step 2:

The technique and incisions used by your plastic surgeon will depend on a number of factors including:

  • Breast size and shape
  • The size and position of your areolas
  • The degree of breast sagging
  • The elasticity of your skin

Step 3: After the incisions are made, your surgeon will reshape your breast to improve contour and firmness.

Step 4:  After your breasts are reshaped and excess skin is removed, the remaining skin is tightened as the incisions are closed.

What can a Breast Lift NOT DO?

While a breast lift can improve the shape of your breasts, it CANNOT change their size or round out the upper part of your breast. If you want your breasts to look fuller, you may want to consider an augmentation.

Breast Augmentation Mastopexy

A breast-augmentation mastopexy is a form of breast surgery that combines the breast enhancement and breast lift procedures to provide a completely rejuvenated breast.

BEST CANDIDATES FOR A BREAST AUGMENTATION MASTOPEXY

The patients who will benefit most from a combined breast lift and augmentation procedure are those that not only have sagging breasts, but who have lost fullness in their upper breast area.
