Plastic Surgery In The Summer: What You Need to Know
With the warm weather of summer, most people spend the season outdoors basking in the pool or beachside, having barbeques, or going on hikes. It’s also the time when the majority of Edmontonians are committed to looking and feeling better, which is why it’s no surprise that a vast number of plastic surgery patients wait until the summer months to have their procedure.
While one of the advantages of having a fall/winter surgery is that you don’t have to undergo recovery in the heat, there are many benefits to summertime surgeries.
Biggest Advantage: Your plastic surgeon will have a much more open and flexible schedule in the summer.
If you are planning a plastic surgery for this summer, here are some useful tips to ensure you get the best and safest results:
1. Be Prepared To Stay In Doors For At Least 2 Weeks
Due to the summer heat, your plastic surgeon will likely advise that you remain indoors for at least 14 days. This is because the sun’s UV rays can be extra-damaging to skin that has recently undergone an invasive operation or treatment, and dehydration and heat exhaustion can be more serious if your body is recovering.
When you do go outside, make sure to follow these tips:
- always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
- avoid peak sun hours (10:00 am - 2:00 pm)
- wear a large brimmed hat and sun protection clothing
- remember that even sitting near windows in your car can expose your skin to harmful UV rays
2. Don’t Forget The Sunblock
It’s important to remember that no matter what plastic surgery procedure you’re planning on getting, taking care of your body should be your number one priority. Although recovery times do require some patience, exposing your skin to direct sunlight is NEVER a good idea.
If you do have to go outside, remember to wear sunblock. This is important because failing to do so can lead to:
- Brown skin discoloration
- Unwanted wrinkles
- Skin dullness
- Dark scarring
Remember: During the healing process, your skin is extremely sensitive and prone to UV radiation absorption. The last thing you want after undergoing a cosmetic treatment is skin discolouration and dark scars, so it’s very important to practice good sun protection after your procedure.
3. Wait At Least Four Weeks to Swim
After any incision-based procedure, the general rule of thumb is to wait at least one month before getting into a swimming pool or hot tub. Most plastic surgeons would recommend waiting up to 6 weeks before entering lakes, oceans, and rivers.
This is very important because doing so will greatly reduce your risk of getting a bacterial infection and will ensure that you minimize any chances of cosmetic and health complications after your plastic surgery.
