Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty, better known as a tummy tuck, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can be used to flatten your abdomen by removing fat and skin and tightening the abdominal wall muscles. This surgery can also remove stretch mark from the lower abdominal area, making it a popular post-pregnancy and post-weight loss procedure.

You might consider undergoing an abdominoplasty if:

  • Your abdomen is flabby, has stretch marks or has excess skin that cannot be improved through diet and exercise.
  • Pregnancy or massive weight loss has affected the shape of your abdomen.
  • Your abdomen protrudes, making you feel unattractive.
  • Your stomach contour is negatively affecting your self esteem.

There are several things you should consider before choosing to undergo an abdominoplasty. Though an abdominoplasty will flatten your abdominal area, providing you with a youthful looking body you will also likely have a scar located in your lower abdominal area. You should also avoid having an abdominoplasty until you are finished having children, since pregnancy can influence surgery results. Weight gain following the surgery can also compromise the results.

Individuals considering abdominoplasty should consult with their plastic surgeon. They should also:

  • Not smoke. Smoking slows down the healing process and increases the risk of serious complications during and after surgery. Smokers should quit at least 6 weeks prior to surgery.
  • Have a stable weight. The best candidates are slender, with extra fat and loose skin in the lower abdominal area. This surgery is not appropriate for generally obese individuals.
  • Not have a significant amount of intra-abdominal fat around their internal organs. If you do have significant fat deposits you may need to slim down before you are an appropriate candidate.
  • Be physically healthy. Being in relatively good physical shape is necessary to tolerate the procedure.
  • Be finished having children. Pregnancy can separate the abdominal muscles that are repaired during abdominoplasty.
  • Not have internal or external scars from any previous abdominal surgery. Previous scarring can affect your candidacy.

Before you choose to undergo an abdominoplasty, or any other cosmetic surgical procedure, consult with your plastic surgeon.
