What to Expect From a Liposuction Recovery

If you’re considering a liposuction procedure, then you may have questions about what to expect regarding to pain and recovery. It’s important to remember that each patient’s recovery is different and will vary in terms of:

  • individual pain tolerance
  • the type of liposuction technique performed
  • the type of anesthesia used
  • the treatment location
  • the number of treated areas

General Liposuction Recovery Timeline

Keeping this in mind, here is a general guideline on the average liposuction recovery, along with some tips on how to recuperate faster and more easily.

2-3 days following surgery: Patients typically experience some pain and discomfort during this period, which can be managed using pain medication. You may need to wear compression garment and you’ll be advised to limit any unnecessary physical activity.

1-2 weeks following surgery: Pain and discomfort may persist, but will become less. Most patients will be able to return to work as long as they refrain from any strenuous activity. A compression garment may continue to be used.

2-5 weeks following surgery: Your pain should have fully subsided and your results should now be visible. However, the treatment area may exhibit some swelling and/or bruising. Most patients can begin light-moderate exercise after week 3, but high impact exercise should be avoided.

6 weeks onwards: Most post-liposuction swelling and bruising should be resolved and you’ll be able to see the results of your procedure. The compression garment won’t be needed any longer and all forms of physical activities can be resumed.

NOTE: Remember to check with your surgeon before returning to your normal fitness routine.

7 Simple Tips For a Fast and Safe Liposuction Recovery

Following all post-procedure instructions provided to you by your surgeon is one of the most important things you can do as a liposuction patient. This includes attending any follow-up appointments and:

  • Avoiding blood-thinning drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirin to decrease the risks of unnecessary bleeding. Caffeine, alcohol, and cigarettes should also be avoided.
  • Resting. Like all surgeries, rest is the most important thing you need for your body to heal. Clear your schedule for a few weeks following your procedure so you can get plenty of relaxation.
  • Staying hydrated. Drinking plenty of water post-procedure is critical as it will greatly aid the body during the healing process.
  • Following a nutritious diet. You should eat a well-balanced diet and limit your intake of salts, sugars, and saturated fats. Make sure to include salmon, berries, and green tea into your meals as they’re full of antioxidants and can boost your recovery.
  • Doing some light exercise. While you should refrain from intensive exercise during the first few weeks after liposuction, going on short walks can speed up the body’s healing process. Just make sure to follow your surgeon’s guidelines and don’t overdo it!
  • Wearing compression garments. While they can be uncomfortable at times, the use of compression garments can reduce your pain and aid in the draining of fluids, as well as protect the incision sites.
  • Avoiding pools. Avoid swimming or taking a bath during your recovery as soaking the treated areas can increase your risk of infection and slow down the healing process.
