Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is one of the most popular surgical enhancement methods, and it’s not hard to see why! Studies have shown that the most common place that people look at each other is in their eyes. If you are unhappy with the look of your eyes or eyelids, an eyelid lift is one of the best ways to boost your appearance and make that first impression even better.

However, before deciding that an eyelid lift is exactly what you need to boost your confidence, it's important to do some research, and here is a great place to start. Here are 5 tips to prepare yourself for an eyelid lift.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

If there is one cosmetic surgery that is slowly but surely becoming ‘in vogue,' one of the leading candidates would most definitely be eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty is a top facial cosmetic procedure that offers prospective patients a method of rejuvenating their facial appearance by lifting, tightening, and taking years of age off of your eyelids.

Being the focal point of our face, our eyes are what most people look at upon first glance. Wanting to have a great first impression is human nature, so it is just as natural to do what we can to look our best. Because of this, eyelid surgery has grown to be one of the most popular methods of facial surgery at our Edmonton plastic surgery clinic.

Thinking About Eyelid Surgery? Here Are 5 Tips To Prepare Yourself

1. Blepharaoplasties Are More Popular Than You May Think

Based on a recent study performed in the United States, eyelid surgery ranked as the third most common cosmetic enhancement procedure, with only liposuction and breast enhancements ranking ahead of it. While the popularity of the surgery should not be a motivating factor to get it yourself, the popularity of eyelid lifts speaks to its effectiveness, safety, and desirability.

2. Eyelid Surgery Is For (Nearly) Anyone!

Just like for any cosmetic surgery, there are certain factors that restrict the eligibility of certain people. However, when compared to other methods of aesthetic enhancement, the criteria list is quite small. Here are some reasons which may restrict you from undergoing eyelid surgery:

  • You are under the age of 18
  • You are a frequent smoker
  • You are pregnant
  • You suffer from bleeding or clotting disorders
  • You are in poor physical or mental health

If none of the above apply to you, eyelid surgery is likely available to you!

3. The Surgery Can Be Permanent

Because the surgical procedure alters the fabric of your skin and tissue, the results tend to be permanent, especially if you take proper care of your body, face, and eyes, and avoid things that are known to negatively affect your skin, such as exposure to sunlight, smoking, and stress.

If the idea of permanently altering your facial appearance dissuades you, there are ways you can rejuvenate your look temporarily. Tissue fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Perlane can be used to reduce the impact of ageing, while botox can also help limit wrinkles and provide a revitalized facial appearance.

4. Your Overal Facial Complexion Will Remain Unchanged

The most common concern we hear from prospective patients when it comes to eyelid surgery is the possibility of not looking like themselves anymore. In truth, however, because the structure of your face is not being altered, you will still look just like yourself! Albeit a slightly younger, more rejuvenated version.

5. Be Prepared!

Before undergoing this surgery, you need to know what you are getting yourself into. Take time to understand all of the risks, details, possible side effects, expected recovery time, and additional costs. While the bulk of your research should be done by searching online and speaking to past recipients of the surgery, the greatest wealth of knowledge available to you is most definitely your board-certified plastic surgeon.

If you are looking for somebody to talk to about the intimate details of this surgery, Dr. Adil Ladak at Alberta Plastic Surgery is available for initial consultations.

FAQ’s

Will my vision be affected by an eyelid lift?

For a temporary period after your surgery, your vision may be slightly blurry while the swelling dissipates. After a couple of days, this will improve, and your vision will be back to normal.

How painful is an eyelid lift?

Due to modern anesthetics, the surgery itself is relatively painless. In the first few days of recovery, you may experience some discomfort, which can be easily mitigated by over-the-counter and prescription pain medication.

How long will my eyelid lift last?

Depending on how well you take care of your eyes and face, your eyelid lift will last anywhere from 5 years to the rest of your life.
