Botox can be used for more than just fine lines and wrinkles

Botox and other injectables have become popular and effective treatments for fighting signs of aging. In addition, these treatments boast non-invasive techniques and shorter recovery times than invasive cosmetic surgeries. In 2013, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, almost 4 million people received Botox injections. However, Botox also has a number of other uses and benefits that many people aren’t aware of.

Excruciating pain, sensitivity to light and challenges in daily tasks like driving and working are just a few symptoms experienced by people who suffer from chronic migraines. According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Botox is “associated with a small to modest benefit for chronic daily headaches and chronic migraines.” Although there is no permanent cure for migraines, Botox could serve as a temporary treatment option for some patients.

Another possible use of Botox is treating what some call “gummy smiles” or cases where patients seek to reduce the appearance of their gums when they smile. There are other treatments for this including gum reduction or recontouring, however, these procedures require rather lengthy surgeries and can be more costly and physically uncomfortable. Botox on the other hand is a minimally invasive option that saw participants of a medical study (published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal) experience on average an 85% reduction in the exposure of their gums.
